The Red Face Syndrome in Asians

It is a known fact that when people are hosting parties, they usually serve alcoholic beverages like wine and beer. Such have been a practice for several decades already. Many people believe that alcoholic beverages can make the celebration more interactive. That is due to the fact that many individuals tend to enjoy communicating with other people when they are holding a glass or bottle of a beverage in their hands. Alcoholic beverages have also been a sort of stress reliever for some people. They usually get a drink every time they want to de-stress from work and their relationship problems. The good thing about alcoholic beverages is that they can be enjoyed alone, with a company, or with a group.

However, people who have Korean, Chinese, and Japanese genes in their blood often experience the so-called Asian flush, also known as Asian glow and alcohol red face. It is common condition among East Asians wherein they experience facial and/or neck redness or flushing after consumption of alcohol. Such appears as red spots. Additionally, some also experience nausea, headache, and fast heartbeat. Such situation has been very uncomfortable for them, especially for those who mingle with people who do not experience such situation. They are often teased to have weak alcohol tolerance. With such in regard, some of them have lost their self confidence that has affected their social lives.

Scientifically speaking, the condition is not related to alcohol tolerance. It is actually because of a DNA that has been acquired from their ancestors. Such is a deficiency in an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 or ALDH2. It is part of the family of enzymes that help the body break down or metabolize alcoholic compounds. Since the toxic compounds of alcohol are not broken down, they are also not removed or released from the body. Thus, the metabolites will accumulate in the person's blood and tissue. Since the body is reacting to such foreign matters, it compensates such by producing the red spots.

The thing about aldh2 deficiency is that it cannot be cured. Basically because it is already part of the person's genes. However, since the redness has been related to alcohol allergy for a long time, many people have tried out using anti-allergy or anti-histamine medicines. Fortunately, the said remedy has been effective for many individuals. However, it should be remembered that such is only temporary. Nowadays, there are also companies or manufacturers that are already producing dietary supplements to prevent the occurrence of Asian flush.

The above-mentioned dietary supplements can be taken before or after alcohol consumption. Generally, the supplement will act like ALDH2, thus preventing the effects of the said genetic mutation. Some people who have tried such have attested that such has been effective so far. The great thing about some of the Asian flush dietary supplements is that they contain lots of anti-oxidant. Such will ensure that the drinker's body will be free from oxidative radicals that also pose danger to the body, as well as contribute to the occurrence of more serious diseases.
