It's the verb that tells you which type of article to use.....
un, une = the whole thing (eating, drinking, buying
le, la, l', les = in general (preferences, even negative)
du, de la, de l', des = some (eating, drinking, buying)
de, d' = negative (eating, drinking, buying)
