Alarm Clock: How It All Started

Alarm clocks are truly irritating but we can't deny the fact that they are indispensable items to keep you on track of your daily schedules. However, it took years before this was invented.

In the beginning, when alarm clocks are still not in existence, the sun is everyone's helpful tool to wake up in the morning. Once one feels the warmth of the sun, this signifies that sleeping is over and it's time to work. However, if one wants to wake up very early, when the sky is still dark, the crowing of the rooster tells that dawn has already started and daylight is about to come. However, this sound can be annoying, especially if it never stops.

Sometimes, it can be hard to wake up when you still want to curl on your bed. To combat this feeling, one simply drinks a lot of water to fully wake up. Surely, it would be hard to stay asleep when the urge to go to the bathroom never stops

Then comes the sundial. This was the oldest clock which can be traced back to the Egyptian period. It determines time according to the movement of the sun. Even after the mechanical clock was invented, this was still used in Europe. However, these days, they are simply used as decorative garden pieces.

Next to Sundial is the water clock. This was in use until mechanical clock was discovered by Ctesibius of Alexandria. It creates a whistle like sound. This was even used by Plato to wake him up in the morning.

By 14th century, tower clocks are used in Western Europe to chime time every day. By 1850, the factory whistle awakes people who live adjacent to factories. Finally, in 1876, Seth E. Thomas patented a mechanical wind up alarm clock. In the latter part of 1870, alarm clocks are used in many homes, making it a big industry in clock manufacturing business.

Eventually, the irritating sound of alarm clock was innovated to local tunes and news through a radio alarm clock. This was invented by James F. Reynolds. In 1956, a snooze feature was added to alarm clocks. The latest alarm clock modification was done in 2006 through the online alarm clock. This begins another chapter in the history of alarm clocks.

Today, everyone is taking advantage of alarm clocks. This time, one can wake up even late at night even when the sun is not still up and the rooster has not yet crowed. One will simply set the alarm clock to one's most preferable time and the clock will alarm at any hour of the day. This has helped people wake up at a time one needs to. It can be for students who want to study their lessons or a medical health worker who needs to report on duty at around midnight.

With all the activities systematically scheduled and done, anyone always have the time to do other things that need to be done. Hence, it pays to have an alarm clock at home and know how it works to make sure that it will serve its purpose well. You may opt for an alarm clock designed as a table clock so you can simply place it on a small table beside your bed.

Will you be the first with a medal?
